Learning in public
I first heard this expression back in 2019 and it’s stuck with me ever since. The idea is that you share what you’re learning while you’re learning it. This opens you up to other people chiming in with feedback and expertise - which can be scary!! But I’m all about collaboration and curiosity and what better way to do that than learn together.
So here’s what I’ve been learning. It’s a mixture of side projects, design challenges, and other bits and bobs. Hope you enjoy!
Usability Evaluation of a Healthcare Portal
There’s a lot of information in the online portal that my doctor’s office uses, from scheduling appointments to past prescriptions. I’m curious to learn more about how a healthcare portal is structured, so I’m going to be evaluating the overall usability and user experience of the site. I’m especially interested in the information architecture!

Design Lessons from an Exhibition About Ayurvedic Medicine
A few years ago, I saw a display of ceramic jars in an exhibition about traditional South Asian medicine and thought, wow, this is such a clever design. The jars had a slight indent in the middle, just enough to reach in and grab one without jostling any of the others.
Ravelry: Accessibility Settings
If you’re even slightly into fiber arts (knitting, crochet, etc.), I bet you’ve heard of Ravelry. It’s a one-stop shop for browsing and buying patterns, reading yarn reviews, and connecting with other craft enthusiasts.
It’s also HUGE. Like, 9 millions users huge. So I guess it shouldn’t be surprising that there was a lot of backlash when they rolled out a massive redesign in 2020.
